Tech Lead on service-oriented backend systems for a machine learning based dialogue and virtual assistant system. Mainly working in Java (Grizzly+Jersey, Play!) and Javascript, with some Ruby on Rails using test-driven development methods (junit, mockito, assertj, cucumber) in a pair-programming environment. Using various technologies including Redis, MySQL, RDF, and many others. Also worked on UI, designing our in-house widget system (Javascript with Grunt, NPM, Bower, jQuery, mocha, chai) and DevOps (Jenkins, docker, AWS, nginx)

Worked on 5 distinct European projects, researching, designing and developing research software within European-wide collaborations.

2010-2014:
OpenIMAJ

Intelligent Multimedia Analysis in Java. Helping to design and implement parts of the open-source Java library for image, video and audio analysis. Also created an introductory video from scratch, producing the music, voice over, graphics and video.

2011-2013:
ARCOMEM

Archiving on the Social-Web. The ARCOMEM project is involved with the extraction of entities and sentiment from web pages and social networking sites for the purposes of intelligent archiving. I have worked on both the middleware architecture (Java, Hadoop/HBase, Mercurial, Hudson) with teams around Europe, and the image and video analysis (Java, SVN, Jenkins). I have also produced a video about the ARCOMEM software from scratch, producing the music, voice over and graphics.

2009-2012:
LivingKnowledge

Searching Bias and Diversity on the Web. I worked on parts of the testbed platform (Java, Hadoop, SVN) and oversaw the integration of analysis modules into it from 8 European technical partners. We also worked on linked-data, boilerplate removal and image analysis (Java, SVN, Jenkins). Resulted in the Yahoo Time Explorer. Coordinated the writing of deliverables. Contributed to review procedures.

2009-2011:

Digital Repository of Local Memories. Worked on the design and requirements of the system architecture. Worked on the deployment of web-services for image and multimedia analysis (Java/Groovy). Contributed to review procedures.

2006-2008:
OpenKnowledge

Peer-to-peer knowledge sharing. This project aimed to enhance the way in which knowledge was shared and transferred on the semantic web. It used a peer-to-peer knowledge sharing system, and I took charge of developing an interpreter for the lightweight coordination calculus (LCC) (Java, JavaCC, SVN), and I was also main developer working on the main middleware with developers across Europe. I also developed demonstrators that were presented during reviews and project meetings. Gave various presentations about the software.

2006-2008:
HealthAgents

Distributed Brain Tumour Descision Support System. I designed and developed the underlying networking system that used an agent paradigm to communicate in a peer-to-peer fashion using LCC and linked-data (Java, SVN). This integrated with a Tomcat front end developed by a Spanish team. Provided APIs, documentation and tutorials on its integration to developers in other countries. Gave various presentations about the software.

Psiphon/Ezzense

Analysis of documents for FOI Requests. Designed and developed a document crawling and analysis system for the building of information asset registers for local government (Java).

2009:
BBC Radio

Analysis of SMS messages. Worked on the animated jQuery front-end to the analysis systems created for SMS messages arriving at radio stations (Javascript, jQuery, jQueryUI). See Screenshot. Some of my jQuery plugins can be found on my developer site.

2005-2006:
AktivePSI

Consultation to Cabinet Office. Consulted with the Cabinet Office to aid in the identification and re-use of governmental data. These were the very first steps in what has become data.gov.uk.

Website for a local folk music band. The news on the front page is driven from the band's Facebook page, and the gig page is driven from a Google calendar. I maintain the website and Facebook feeds.

Designed website for Barbara Spencer, dance teacher. The website includes a backend system for changing the news on the front page, updating the class times and venues, for emailling to the mailing lists and for updating class costs and teacher details. Provide ongoing maintenance.

Photo Shop Imaging for The Photo Shop in Poole

Designing and developing online presence for this photo/canvas printing company. Includes backend administration of orders and payment facilities based on a Wordpress backend. Sadly they shut down their web presence and it is no longer running.

CASS Website for Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute

Designed and developed the CASS website including the development of a course management system that populates the programme page. Also developed the online course registration and payment facility. Backend system also provides a basic CMS. No longer available.

Paul Johnson Photography for Paul Johnson

Designed theme for Wordpress blog based on existing theme of Paul's website. Also provided an accessibility and usability audit for his website. He has recently updated to a new theme.

SSBS08 Conference Website for Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute

Designed and developed the SSBS08 conference website, reusing the ConfWiz conference management system for paper submission and reviewing. No longer available.

A.B.Carriages Website for Joanne Hall, Proprietor

Designed the website for this horse-drawn carriage company using a book-analogy for the navigation. Also designed company stationery and produced videos. Provided ongoing maintenance until the company closed.

ISCD07 Conference Website for School of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton

Designed and developed the ICSD2007 conference website including developing a re-useable conference management system (ConfWiz) that allows academic papers to be submitted and reviewed.

2002-2005: MIAKT

Breast Cancer Distributed Decision Support System. MIAKT was a project to aid the collaboration of doctors during a breast cancer diagnosis consultation meeting. We built a system based around linked-data and a heavy Java applet (J2EE) that consolidated and allowed visualisation of a patient's examinations (x-rays, MRIs, clinical history). I was the designer and architect for the service-based architecture. I also coordinated the integration of the project partners' technologies. Gave presentations of the system at project meetings and the review meetings. Produced a demonstration video about the system. See Demonstration Video

2001-2002: DEAP

Design of Experiments for Assembled Products. Designed and developed a software tool for the design of experiments on products with multiple parts (Visual C++). Involved the conversion of existing algorithmic code from FORTRAN to C++.

2001-2002: GiSEL

Grouping in Screening with Elicitation. Designed and developed a web-based system for the design of experiments to determined the crucial factors in an experimental design (PHP). Involved the integration of existing algorithmic code (C) into the system as well as the design of appropriate user interfaces.

1995, 1996, 1997: Busary Placements

As part of the GPT Bursary placements, I spent three summers doing various computer programming related work. I built modules for the System-X telephone exchange software and network including a time-management system that would synchronise time between network nodes, and a mathematical expression parser and interpreter for the telephone exchange management software (C++).
