Day 6 - 8th October 2003 - Toulon and Aix-en-Provence
We awoke early to watch us dock in Toulon. The seas had been particularly rough the night before through the Gulf du Lyons, keeping Caroline awake. David, of course, slept like a log through the whole thing! We took a tour to a pleasant University town called Aix-en-Provence where we struggled to buy anything with our minimal French.

We were treated to a beautiful sunrise as we arrived.

Toulon is also an important naval base as well as a marina for yachts.

Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur, built between the 12th and 17th Centuries in various architectural styles

The organist was playing during our visit.

The organ was lit up by a bright column of sunlight

The cathedral was beautifully decorated inside.

The stairway of this building was decorated with trompe l'oeil.

Founded by the Romans in 122 B.C. Aix-en-Provence was originally named Aquae Sextiae because of its numerous springs.

A shiny thing :)

A pretty French street, full of students going out for lunch.

The Aix police rode around on bicycles.

La Rotonde Fountain. The three statues symbolise Justice, Agriculture and Arts.

Cezanne frequently painted the different faces of Mont San Victoire.

We struggled through rush hour traffic and made it back to the ship just in time.

Au revoir Toulon.
